RAY BARRY
In pursuit of colour and textural values, Ray Barry works both in flat design and textural relief to give added dimension and to expand content and meaning, both of which provide for Ray Barry the stimulus for creative art making. Ray Barry enjoys creating order from chaos and, conversely, deconstructing order to the point of meaningful construction. Forms and colour suggest spatial relationships that obey the laws of nature in a pleasing and logical result, sometimes harmonious in balance, sometimes ambiguous and sometimes disturbing.
Ray Barry, born in Britain in December 1931, says in a statement referring to his mixed media, abstracted painting and collage:
"Although my work is generally non-referential, harbour or landscape motifs often find their way into the structure, forming mosaics, influenced by stained glass, with rich elements of colour and texture. On my 'journey', in search of perception and responsiveness to life, I use changing techniques such as translucency, over painting and drawing, charcoal, rubbing, scratching, scumbling and occasionally collage. The result may not always please the viewer, but evidence of 'the search' is there."
Ray Barry has a BA Hons from Falmouth College of Art. He has taken part in collective and solo shows in Cornwall, London and Africa.
